the rymer |

July 15, 2008

saturday night i went and experienced one of the most amazing events. downtown fifth and church, the rymer gallery.  a small town nashville band named quote was hosting a cd release party. over the past two years they participated in a compilation effort that ended in a cd slash book. the two were packaged together into one of the most inspiring efforts i have ever witnessed. the book features a set of poems, short stories and art pieces that are all intertwined in each other. ten pieces of art for ten stories and ten tracks, with poems and lyrics scattered throughout. the show had a five dollar cover and sported an open wine bar that made for a tasty night. the scence was something out of a movie. this up_scale indie gathering of the trendys around nashville, old and young alike. i found myself smiling and at home, thinking this is something that i want to be apart of one day. the walls were adorned with wonderful paintings and metal work spanning many styles and medium. a set of manikin sculpures created out of keys and beads and lug nuts spread throughout the scenery. attendance was fitting for the gallery and filled the space quite nice. there were two acts that night. the first, a duo of folk singers. classical guitars, bells, and an old banjo. many songs were converted emily dickinson poems and were just as fitting when sang as they would be to read. i sipped my wine and listened intently. the second set was from the host, quote. in full band, they proceeded to play through the newly released album. i sat against a side wall and watched as they played, two guitars a piano, standup bass, percussion, and a trash can. meanwhile an old man made his way to my level and sincerely asked if i would help him up after the set. i agreed with a chuckle. i later found this man to be the father of the frontman. he told me stories of the songs and stories of the singer. how this was a birth of something that had once been a dream. i told the man that i was amazed to be apart of the night, and he thanked me for coming. the back wall featured the ten pieces of art that spawned the ideas of the words set to music and story. i looked them over and admired their work and the minds that created the tales that came to fill the pages of the book that i carried on my way out. i can only hope that i will be apart of something that wonderful one day. to intertwine the ideas and creations of over seventy people into an night that people will share together, and walk away having experienced a glimpse of something bigger than themselves.

the whole in one |

June 29, 2008

this will make up for lost time. my week moved fast. highlighted with listening parties. newness. and idea sharing. our first festival date for the leeland promotion was wednesday. with one under the belt i feel better about the rest of the summer dates. the first one went well. there were a few communication issues and failed to get my volunteers in touch with the band on time. but i can only do so much from my desk when you end up having home numbers and not cells. they had a blast thought. things will go better this next week.

when a lot of what i do during the week is idea driven and less completing task, sometimes i find myself with nothing to do. so i rounded up a small project that involved creating a time line for an artist marketing plan. typical marketing plans include each departments plans for the artist over about a six month period. my job was to take the plan and create a time line that graphically showed the plan as a whole over time. in order to make sure everything was included i decided to go around to the heads of each department and get them to double check on my work and add any new points that may not have been included in the plan.

monday and wednesday produced two special event for me. two bands, nevertheless and krystal meyers, had listening parties for their new albums. listening parties are focused around hearing the bands new album. q and a with the artist and their management. and food. great times at the label, with everyone chilled out and joking around.

im getting used to the fact that ben my boss will not usually be in the office. this week we had a great talk about what he wants the rest of my summer to look like. over the next few weeks i will be meeting with a variety of people outside of our label. to include booking agents. a and r. managers. and a host of other people. exciting, because ben has a vision of allowing me to learn and create ideas and gain exposure in areas outside of provident. been has begun emailing a few of these fine people asking for a bit of there time to allow me to chat with them. this week i emailed back and forth with two people and have lunch and coffee dates set up for next week.

thursday provided another great conversation. a while ago i had been asked to develop my thoughts on what i would do to build the best web site i could for an artist. well i did. but failed to find a great time to sit back down with jim, head interactive marketing guy, to discuss these ideas. thursday provided that good time. i made my way to jims office in the afternoon and sat down to chat. he took me into an adjacent meeting room with a few white boards on the wall. he cleared one off and told me to start talking. about twenty minutes later i ran out of breath and ideas. meanwhile jim had filled the whole white board with pictures and words and arrows that described everything that i had said. what i had given him was a more philosophical process to how i break down artist web sites. he loved it and gave me a bit of homework to process next week. then we will chat again.

friday i spent most of the day working on the artist graphics for the big inter project for hr. ill try to get a few posted in the next day or two.

my schedule just got a bit more crazy. wednesday i was hired on to the lifeguard staff at the franklin ymca. twenty five to thirty hours a week on the stand and in the sun. my first shift was this morning. i rolled up at five forty five this morning and worked till around eleven. i also participated in a four hour nap this afternoon. the morning shift is slow. only a few lap swimmers and an aerobics class. the main pool area opens up at ten and the scene begins to pick up pace. the y has a total of four pools. a large outdoor pool. deep end. shallow end. slide. beach walk in. a rock wall. a baby pool sits off to the side. indoors there is a pool made up of three swimming lanes and another small shallow pool. no one drowned. a good start.

_new pictures

i spent the afternoon in west end after a trip to the bike pedler to see about getting a front brake put on my fixie. west end happens to be the west end of downtown nashville. previously i have spent a few nights in this area of town for concerts and coffee. after placing an order for bike parts i headed over to cafe’ coco and enjoyed a cold coffee and free internet. only having spent time in the are after dark, i decided to take a stroll and see the city in the sun. i made my way around town on the sidewalks. through vanderbilt. down twenty first. and in and out of a few shops. documented with pictures i spent the whole afternoon on foot. four to five miles of cross walk after croswalk and down sidewalks dotted with advertisement benches. vandi med center. frat houses. exit/in. book stores. thirft shops. pangea. record dumps. fido for another cold coffee. dragon park. past the belcourt theatre. and the parthenon, though i thought it was in greece.

ben is still m.i.a, leaving me with nothing new to start on. the past two days i have been working on getting the leeland packages ready to ship to our eager volunteers. the button cards arrived yesterday and i have been sorting and repackaging them into boxes of five hundred. half done, then stuff a shirt and ticket information and ten boxes of festival fun will be shipped to the appropriate recipients.
